OCTOBER 5, 1979 — After jaw-dropping performances in nearly every contest in the series, Willie Stargell was crowned the Most Valuable Player for the 1979 National League Championship Series. In Game 3, Stargell belted a third-inning solo home run off Reds hurler Fred Norman to extend his Club’s lead, one they’d carry through to their eventual 7-1 victory. Undoubtedly, Stargell’s performances helped his Club sweep the Reds in the best-of-five series.
