APRIL 3, 1989 — In less than two years since being picked first overall in the 1987 MLB Draft, Ken Griffey Jr. made his debut as the Mariners visited Oakland. The 19-year-old Griffey, who hit .325 across two levels in the Minors in 1988, took the second pitch he saw from Oakland Athletics starter Dave Stewart to deep center, resulting in a stand-up double in his first at-bat.
