AUGUST 9, 1996 — Hall-of-Fame shortstop Cal Ripken Jr. amassed 3,184 hits over the course of his historic Major League Baseball career, and on the way to the 3,000 milestone, he recorded his 2,500th career hit in a contest between his Baltimore Orioles and the Chicago White Sox. After connecting with a pitch from White Sox hurler Bill Simas, Ripken Jr. singled for this milestone hit. Unfortunately for Ripken Jr. and his Club, the Orioles would lose the 10-inning contest, 4-3.
