OCTOBER 2, 1986 — Following his NL Rookie of the Year campaign in 1984 and his NL Cy Young Award-winning year in 1985, Dwight Gooden made his last start of the 1986 regular season just seven strikeouts away from another historical achievement. The young fireballer squared off against the Montréal Expos and delivered another brilliant outing. Gooden scattered four hits over eight innings of one-run ball and fanned exactly seven batters. With this effort, Dwight became the first pitcher in MLB history to strike out 200-plus batters in each of his first three big-league seasons.
