Willie Mays stole the show during Game 1 of the 1954 World Series between the New York Giants and the Cleveland Indians with one of the most iconic catches in MLB history. In the top of the eighth inning with the score tied, 2-2, and two runners on base, Vic Wertz launched a pitch, delivered from Don Liddle, and sent it 420 feet to deep center field. Mays darted back towards the deepest part of the Polo Grounds and made a jaw-dropping, over-the-shoulder snag. Willie's catch prevented the Indians from taking the lead and the Giants would go on to win, 5-2, in extra innings.
