Willie Mays Leaps Jimmie Foxx for 2nd on all-time HRs list
St. Louis St. Louis Cardinals
AUGUST 17, 1966 — In front of a crowd of 21,956 at Candlestick Park, Willie Mays clubbed his 30th longball of the 1966 season off of St. Louis Cardinals hurler Ray Washburn. The "Say Hey Kid's" towering blast cleared the right-field fence for his 535th career home run, which allowed him to leap Jimmie Foxx on the all-time home runs list to move into second place behind Babe Ruth. "It sure feels great to have it over with," Mays asserted. "Now we can settle down and think about winning the pennant instead of worrying about my homers."
