MAY 14, 1972 — Just three days after the New York Mets acquired Willie Mays, the legendary slugger was debuted against his former team, the San Francisco Giants. Mays scored early in the contest, but it was a dramatic home run in the bottom of the fifth inning that punctuated his story-book Mets debut. The home run gave his new team the edge and ended up being the deciding run, pushing the Mets past the Giants in a 5-4 win.
